Dalian book spot in last eight
Dalian Shide, of China, became the first side to book the place in the last eight of Asia's premier club competition after coming from behind to beat Krung Thai Bank on Tuesday night. The win leaves the Chinese outfit, who reached the semi-finals of last year's AFC Champions League, on a maximum 15 points after five games with just one game to go, eight points ahead of Krung Thai Bank, who needed an unlikely win to maintain their slim hopes of overhauling Dalian. The hero of the night for Dalian was Ermin Siljak, whose brace took his total for the tournament to date to eight to make him the leading scorer in the competition. The Thai side, who were beaten 2-0 by Dalian in the game in Bangkok back in February, took the lead against the run of play on 19 minutes through the team captain, Rungroch Sawangsri. Siljak scored a vital equaliser on the stroke half-time from the penalty spot, and in the second half, the home side made their superiority count. Siljak scored his second of the night on 79 minutes before substitute Hao Haidong came off the bench to seal the win in the 81st minute. "We are very happy to qualify for the quarter-finals," said Dalian coach Shi Lei after the game. "I was missing a lot of players to the national teams but I didn't think it was tough for us to win. "Now we have reached the quarter-finals, it is very important to continue to do well because it has been too long since Dalian won continental honours in Asia. We want to be the champions this year." |
