Argentina's Crespo gets chance he was waiting for
Argentina's Hernan Crespo was given the chance he had been waiting for when he was recalled to the squad by new coach Jose Pekerman, the striker said on Wednesday. This is what I've been hoping for so that I could go back to what I was," said Crespo, who was named in the squad on Monday for the World Cup qualifier at home to Uruguay on Saturday and next Wednesday's match in Chile. "I've been going through a very rough patch and, for the last year and a half, I've been afraid of getting injured and losing my place," he told reporters. "Today, I'm more relaxed but I need to confirm this on the field." Crespo was considered one of the world's top forwards until the 2002 World Cup, when Argentina were surprisingly knocked out in the first round. He then had an unhappy season in Italy with Inter Milan, scoring only six goals in Serie A. Last season he moved to English Premier League Chelsea but never really settled and has now joined AC Milan. Crespo was rested from the Copa America in July and appeared to be in danger of losing his place when the Argentina team improved without him. "I hope to have a good game on Saturday," he said. "I need a morale-booster because, above all, I need to feel important to myself." Coach Pekerman was appointed last month as Marcelo Bielsa's
successor. |
