Hubei school stampede kills 1, injures 25

One student was killed and 25 others were injured in a school stampede Thursday in Lijiahe Township Primary and Middle School of Xuan'en County, central China's Hubei Province, said local sources.

The stampede took place at 3:40 p.m. on Wednesday when some of the students who were walking in the front of a people flow for leaving the teaching building on completion of the classes of the day suddenly fell down, causing the students walking behind also losing balance.

The dead student is identified as Zheng Longyun, 10, a fifth grader. All the injured, who range from second to sixth graders, have been hospitalized.

The tragedy is under further investigation.

Xuan'en County falls under jurisdiction of Tujia-Miao Autonomous Prefecture of Enshi, a mountainous region in southwestern Hubei Province.
