China's top legislator Wu Bangguo flew into the capital city of Zambia Thursday to begin his three-day official goodwill visit.

Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, will hold meetings with Zambia's top officials, including President Levy Mwanawasa, Vice-President Mwape and Speaker of the House Amusaa Mwanamwambwa.

With diplomatic relations stretching back four decades, China and Zambia treat each other as reliable friends and trustworthy co-operative partners.

"A line from an Chinese ancient poem goes: 'distance can not separate true friends at heart, like neighbours they feel, thousand miles apart'," said Wu in a written statement released upon his arrival.

China and Zambia share a similar history and face the common task of development, which have bonded peoples of these two countries in brotherhood, Wu said.

Wu is scheduled to deliver a speech to parliament, which will touch upon Sino-Zambia relations as well as elaborate upon China's Africa policy.

China's top official will also visit a copper mine and the two countries will sign a number of agreements.

Before leaving for Zambia from Zimbabwe, Wu met Vice-President of Zimbabwe Joseph Msika. Both promised to make joint efforts to push forward bilateral ties.

The Zambia visit is the third leg of Wu's four-nation African tour, which includes Kenya, Zimbabwe and last-stop, Nigeria.
