At least 21 killed in Kazakhstan coal mine blast (Agencies) Updated: 2004-12-10 11:13
A powerful blast ripped through a coal mine in Kazakhstan on Sunday, killing
at least 21 people, Russia's Interfax news agency reported.
Interfax quoted Kazakh mining safety authorities as saying about 100 workers
were inside the Shakhtinskaya mine in the northern city of Karaganda when the
blast occurred. The agency did not say what caused the blast.
Officials in Kazakhstan, a former Soviet republic in Central Asia, could not
be contacted immediately for comment but Interfax said rescue work was under
way.
