Papa Bouba Diop grabbed a sensational equaliser for Fulham and left Manchester United nine points adrift of leaders Chelsea at the top of the Barclays Premiership after a 1-1 draw.

Alan Smith's first-half goal looked to have kept United in touch at the top but Diop's 30-yard blockbuster earned Fulham a creditable draw.

England international Smith took advantage of some woeful defending by Sylvain Legwinski to slot the ball home from an acute angle and put United in control in the opening half.

United had already thumped both uprights through Roy Keane and Wayne Rooney within the space of two minutes prior to Smith's opener while Fulham's Andy Cole, made captain against his former club, also hit the post in the second half.

Whereas Chris Coleman was buoyant after the final whistle, Sir Alex Ferguson was left to regret a string of near misses.

Asked for his verdict on the match, Ferguson said: "What do you think?

"That was an absolute giveaway. A good performance, some of the football was fantastic, but we just didn't finish them off.

"In fairness, it's a fantastic strike from the Fulham player (Diop). It's destroyed a really terrific performance from us football-wise."
