India tests supersonic cruise missile
India successfully tested on Tuesday a new surface-to-surface version of its supersonic cruise missile being developed jointly by New Delhi and Moscow, a defense ministry statement said.
The missile hit the chosen target during the test conducted in the western desert state of Rajasthan, the statement said.
The Brahmos missile, named after India's Brahmaputra river and Russia's Moscow river, has a range of 180 miles and can carry a conventional warhead of up to 660 lbs.
Pakistan earlier this month test-fired a nuclear-capable, surface-to-surface ballistic missile capable of hitting targets deep inside arch-rival India.
The nuclear-armed neighbors routinely carry out missile tests while they at the same time hold talks as part of a cautious peace process relaunched early this year. |
