Chinese iron roses lose "match of vengeance"
China lost to Germany 2-0 in a match dubbed by the Chinese local media "match of vengeance" Tuesday at the women's Four-Nation soccer tournament.
Goals from Annike Krahn and Renate Lingor gave the world champions the first victory over China since the European side's 8-0 thrash of the Steel Roses in the opening round at the Athens Olympic Games. Krahn put Germany ahead seven minutes into the match on a chilly Tuesday night in the southern port city of Quanzhou as the 19-year-old stroke from long range beat an unprepared goalkeeper Zhang Yanru. Lingor, who scored the only goal for Germany at this tournamentprior to the match, took the free kick, which was deflected by thea Chinese defender and the ball dropped into the net. China were closest to scoring on 68 minutes when referee Natalia Avdonchenko awarded them a penalty due to a German player's hand ball but Li Jie's shot was saved by German goalie Silke Rottenberg. China, however, finished top of the standings of the four-team event and
Australia, crashing Russia 5-0 in the other match Tuesday, were second. Germany
ranked third while Russia were bottom after three losses.
