Chelsea rolls to 1-0 victory over Everton
Eidur Gudjohnsen's second-half goal against 10-man Everton lifted front-running Chelsea to a 1-0 victory Saturday, giving the Blues a 12-point lead as they march toward their first English league title in 50 years.
Everton stayed with Chelsea at Goodison Park despite playing a man short after James Beattie was sent off in the eighth minute for head-butting defender William Gallas.
Gudjohnsen scored on a tap-in in the 69th — his 11th of the season — to give Chelsea 68 points with 11 league games remaining. Manchester United has 56, with defending champion Arsenal at 54. Everton has 48 followed by Liverpool (43).
United plays Sunday at Manchester City, and Arsenal is home against Crystal Palace on Monday.
Carlos Bocanegra started for Fulham and Eddie Lewis started for Preston North End, both having rushed back after starting for the United States on Wednesday in its 2-1 World Cup qualifying win at Trinidad and Tobago. Fulham beat Derby 4-2. Brian McBride dressed for Fulham on the bench. Preston North End beat Queens Park Rangers 2-1.
