Birthday boy Ding continues progress

Chinese prodigy Ding Junhui has sent himself a best birthday gift as he eliminated compatriot Marco Fu to enter the semi-finals of the China Open snooker tournament.

The teenager player, who turned 18 on Friday, upset the world number 25 5-2 in a marathon of three and a half hours.

The victory made Ding renew his best record in the world-ranking event.

He was the only Chinese player who advanced into the last four of the tournament.

Ding, the former world under-21 champion who has fuelled China's current craze for snooker will play either Paul Hunter or Ken Doherty in the semis.
