'Friends' Ross to Act on London Stage

'Friends' Ross to Act on London Stage

David Schwimmer, who starred as hapless lover Ross in the TV hit "Friends," will play a louche lothario on the London stage next month, the latest U.S. star to swap Hollywood glamour for West End kudos.

The 38-year-old Schwimmer makes his debut at the Gielgud Theater in the play "Some Girls" alongside "Vera Drake" actress Lesley Manville and Saffron Burrows who starred in the film "Troy."

Schwimmer, who entertained millions as Ross Geller, has said acting in the West End is the realisation of a boyhood dream.

He is following a well-trodden path.

Over the last few years, film stars, who command multi-million dollar fees for screen appearances, have been lining up to fill time between shoots on London's stages.

They say they want to return to the purest form of acting -- the stage.

Batman star Val Kilmer signed up for the lead role in the stage version of "The Postman Always Rings Twice" at the Playhouse, while Kevin Spacey, star of "The Usual Suspects," has become artistic director at the Old Vic.

Kim Cattrall, of "Sex and the City" fame, currently stars in "Who's Life is it Anyway" as a bedridden disabled sculptor contemplating life without the use of her legs.

Other movie stars who have acted on the West End stage in recent years include Nicole Kidman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kathleen Turner, Matt Damon and Madonna.
