More than 50 feared dead in Sri Lanka train crash
More than 50 people were feared dead and some 40 injured after a passenger train crashed into a commuter bus at a level-crossing in central Sri Lanka on Wednesday, police said.
"The Colombo-Kandy inter-city express train collided with a commuter bus. We fear close to 60 have died," said a spokeswoman at the police emergency center in Colombo.
The crash took place around 8:30 a.m. (10:30 p.m. EDT Tuesday) at a level-crossing in Polgahawela town, about 40 miles northeast of the capital, she said.
The train was bound for the hill capital Kandy from Colombo while the bus was headed toward Colombo, she said.
"They are still bringing in the injured. There are more than 40 injured in the hospital so far," said Nalika Bandara, a healthcare officer at Kurunegala government hospital near the crash site. |
