China will try to win a medal in the women's softball event at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, a top sports official said on Sunday.

Jiang Xiuyun, deputy director of the China Administration Center of Golf, Baseball and Softball, said that the Chinese softball team, who finished fourth in the Athens Olympic Games, has been reshuffled and the young players are shouldering the taskof winning "a medal in the 2008 Games at home."

"Although there's still a wide gap between us and the world's top teams, I still believe the young girls will improve three years later on our fourth finish in Athens," Jiang said.

"Our goal in the Beijing Olympics remain unchanged. That's to win a medal of any colors," she said.

China's best feat in the Olympics came in the Atlanta Games in 1996, where they won the silver medal.
