Bologna beat Parma to edge closer to league survival
Bologna moved a step closer to Serie A survival when they beat Parma 1-0 in the first leg of their relegation playoff on Tuesday.
A late brawl spilled over into the dugouts and resulted in the sending-off of Parma coach Gedeone Carmignani and reserve goalkeeper Luca Bucci, plus Bologna coach Carlo Mazzone and visiting midfielder Christian Amoroso. The home defeat was a bitter blow for Parma, who were missing six suspended players, including first-choice strikers Alberto Gilardino and Domenico Morfeo. ADVERTISEMENT
They must now hope for a good performance in the return match in Bologna on Saturday to avoid returning to Serie B after 15 seasons in the top flight. The only goal came in the 18th minute when Albanian striker Igli Tare headed Vasile Nastase's cross past keeper Sebastien Frey. Parma fought back but Bologna keeper Gianluca Pagliuca pulled off fine saves to keep out Francesco Ruopolo's powerful first-half effort and a late, curling free kick by Fabio Simplicio.
