Diego Maradona is returning to Boca Juniors as a vice president in charge of managing the first-division roster.

Club president Mauricio Macri announced the move Wednesday. Maradona will start on Aug. 1.

Maradona started his career at Boca, and the club hopes the soccer great can help revive it from its worst season in years, which occurred during Boca's centennial.

Macri said Maradona's role will include managing player transfers, the roster in general, traveling with the team abroad, and providing a key support role to the next coach, who has not yet been hired.

The team was still seeking a successor for Jorge Benitez, who resigned last week when TV footage caught him apparently spitting at an opposing player during Boca's ouster by Chivas of Mexico in the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals.

Maradona has said he favors Alfio Basile, the coach who led Argentina in the last World Cup he played in 1994. But Macri said there are other candidates, including former Argentina coach Marcelo Bielsa.

Macri said Boca's executive board will announce a decision in a few days.
