Tianjin ready for ASEM finance ministers

The organizing committee of thesixth ASEM Finance Ministers'Meeting said here Friday that thenorthern port city Tianjin has been fully prepared for the meeting, which is due on June 26.

Nearly 28 million yuan (about 3.4 million US dollars) has beeninvested to improve the traffic and environment in the TianjinEconomic Development Area, where the meeting is centered, sourceswith the organizing committee said.

Meanwhile, streets near the conference building have beenblocked and huge manpower has been deployed to for security.

Leading finance officials from 38 Asian and European countriesand the European Union are expected to gather in Tianjin two dayslater to discuss issues concerning the global economy and closerAsian and European economic cooperation, the Chinese financeministry said on May 26.

Representatives from the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the Asian Development Bank will also attend the meeting.

China's Premier Wen Jiabao is expected to attend the openingceremony of the meeting and delivered a speech.

The documents, to be made public following the meeting, include a statement by the chairperson of the meeting, the TianjinInitiative, and a report on the effectiveness of the ministerialmeeting.
