BARCELONA, Aug 24 (Reuters) - Spanish champions Barcelona were dealt a penalty shoot-out defeat by their Italian counterparts Juventus in their final run-out before the start of the Spanish season at the Nou Camp on Wednesday.

Frank Rijkaard's side fell behind early on when Alessandro Del Piero converted from the penalty spot in the 10th minute after new signing Patrick Vieira went down in the area.

But a neatly fashioned strike from midfielder Andres Iniesta midway through the second half and a spectacular drive from Giovanni van Bronckhorst three minutes later put the Catalans in front.

Juve striker David Trezeguet levelled the game with another penalty a minute from time after a clear foul by Edmilson and Fabio Capello's side secured victory 4-2 in the shoot out.

It was the first time since 1994 that Barcelona had lost the Hans Gamper trophy, the traditional curtain-raiser to the Catalan club's season.

Barca begin the defence of their crown with a match at promoted Alaves on Saturday, while Juve start theirs at home to Chievo Verona on Sunday.
