Zhang Huaixi -- Vice-chairman of 10th CPPCC National Committee

The following is the biographical sketch of Zhang Huaixi, who was just elected vice-chairperson of the 10th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC):

Male, born in 1935, a native of Wuxi city, Jiangsu Province.

Starting to work in Nov. 1951 and afterwards studying at the Dept. of History of Communist Party History at the People's University of China in 1957-1961, and working at the Beijing Forestry College as assistant to political science teacher, and joining the China Association for Promoting Democracy (CAPD) in 1987.

Deputy magistrate of Jiangyin County, Jiangsu, in 1984-1987; deputy director of Wuxi City Education Bureau and deputy secretary-general of the Wuxi City Government in 1987-1988; and vice-mayor of Wuxi City in 1988-1993;

Elected vice-governor of Jiangsu Province, vice-chairman and chairman of the Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the China Association for Promoting Democracy (CAPD) in 1993-1997; and a member, a standing Committee member and vice-chairman of the CAPD Central Committee from 1997 till now.

Elected a member of the 8th CPPCC National Committee; a Standing Committee member, and vice-chairman of Education, Science Culture and Health Committee of 9th National People's Congress (NPC) in March 1998.
