Sciences

Following the strategy of "Thriving Changchun with Science Education", Changchun is deepening its science and technology system reform and strengthening its innovation ability. In the year 2001, Changchun carried out 498 scientific and technological developing projects of municipal level and 67 scientific and technological developing projects of state level. The number of patent applications reached 1,254, which is 13.4% increase of the year before. The science and technology achievements increased evidently, and 244 were evaluated, double checked and acknowledged, of which, 80 were awarded advanced honors as science and technology achievements of and above municipal level.

Scientific and technological personnel team is developing steadily. There are 400,000 scientific and technological employees in companies and units in towns and counties of Changchun. Among all these employees, there are 23 academicians of China's Academy of Social Science and China's Academy of Science and 388 persons enjoying special subsidy.

Education

The educational reform is being carried out in a steady pace. In the year 2001, there were 25 full-time advanced universities and colleges, enrolling 5,4000 new students and having 156,000 students on campus altogether, 13 advanced instates for adults education, absorbing 10,000 new students and having 24,000 students on campus altogether, 27 collegiate and middle schools with 18,000 students on campus, and 1,848 elementary schools with 600,000 students on campus, and the enrollment rate of school-aged children reached 97%.

Culture

The causes of culture, arts, broadcast and TV, and news and press are developing healthily. Professional arts origination has achieved great successes. Five Chinese Changchun Film Festival have been successfully held. In addition to big events, such as the 200-year anniversary celebration of Changchun and film festivals, a variety of mass cultural activities have been carried out in the form of plaza cultural show.

Public Hygiene

Public hygiene is well developing, and the medical care system reform is speeding up. By the end of the year 2001, the number of medical care organizations has reached 1,044 in the city, with 2,4000 hospital wards for medical care and protective treatment and 3,6000 medical professionals. There are 2.2 doctors serving every one thousand people. With the development of community medical services, 98 community medical service centers have been set up, and the service covers 90 % of the population. Also, 100,000 health service center contracts have been signed.

Physical Education

Changchun achieved great successes in racing sports, participated in the international and national and provincial level sports activities altogether 99 among those, 9 gold medals, 11 silver medals and 10 bronze medals. In this field, Changchun have got 105 gold medals, 67 silver medals and 76 bronze medals in national competitions as well as 272 medals in provincial ones. The civic sports activities are prospered widely and awarded as "National Sports Model City". Changchun has won the honor as Excellent Organizer
