A total of 8,167 elderly people have received financial subsidies at different levels in Pingtan county, Fujian province.

Pingtan introduced the subsidy scheme last year covering people above the age of 80. Retired government and public institution staff are excluded.

Under the scheme, residents between the age of 80 and 89 get 50 yuan every month. The standard is 100 yuan for those between 90 and 99, and 200 for centenarians and older.

There are currently 7,047 residents in their 80s, and 1,120 in their 90s. They received the one-time allowance due from June to December on Dec 24, authorities said.

There are more than 50,000 people above the age of 60, accounting for 12.8 percent of the total population in Pingtan.
