The groundwater level of the Baotu Spring had dropped to 28.11 meters on July 9, lower than the yellow warning line of 28.15 meters.
The spring is Jinan's most important landmark, and it is sometimes called the "City of Springs".
Jinan boasts hundreds of springs dotting its landscape, in addition to the 460,000-sq km Daming Lake created by the convergence of hundreds of springs.
Whenever the groundwater level of the Baotu Spring is close to the yellow warning line, water from a reservoir is released into the Yufu River to replenish the groundwater, which is crucial for keeping the springs alive.
