Inheriting traditional Chinese culture can further promote harmonious development of the society and economy, Feng Jicai suggested during the Fifth Session of the 12th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

Feng Jicai, president of the Chinese Folk Literature and Art Association and a member of the CPPCC Committee, attended the National Two Sessions and the same as every year, he focused much on culture.

"Premier Li Keqiang put the cultural industry at an outstanding position in this year's government report," Feng said. "The development of modernization not only needs fortune but also spiritual products and inheriting traditional Chinese culture can promote the harmonious development of society and China's economy."

He put forward two proposals on cultural heritage protection and inheriting traditions.

"Protecting ancient villages is key aspect for cultural heritage protection. To date, 4,153 traditional villages with thousands of years of farming history have been included in the protection list but some are developing tourism blindly to overcome poverty."

Feng suggested that the government should establish regulations on permissions, planning, protecting, and supervising tourism development of ancient villages to prevent destruction brought by a fast developing tourism industry.

In terms of inheriting intangible elements of culture, Feng mentioned that primary and middle school students should receive some education on traditional culture to encourage them to participate in and experience such culture.

"Let students join in fairs of traditional festivals and hold literature and art activities to help them better understand the culture and make traditions gradually become a habit in their lives," Feng added.
