After saving lives, the priority now for the authorities in earthquake-affected areas of Sichuan province is preventing the spread of disease, said an article in the Beijing Times (excerpts below).

Apart from the regular disinfection of resettlement sites, much more attention now must be given to preventing the spread of infectious diseases.

According to media coverage, hygiene and health conditions including access to clean and safe water in quake zones needs to be improved.

The poor public health conditions, coupled by the rainy, damp weather in the affected areas, can easily cause alimentary and respiratory diseases.

Some victims are already suffering from diarrhea, colds and fever.

Efforts should be planned to improve emergency infrastructure, such as the construction of toilet facilities, ensuring power and clean water supplies, and waste disposal.

To reduce the danger of diseases spreading further, great importance should be attached to making sure quake-hit regions should be equipped with the necessary medical supplies and all work is carefully planned.
