Rice farmers battle destructive field snails
Field snail eggs stick to a pole in a rice field in Baihe village, Southwest China's Sichuan province, June 10, 2010. The snails consume the base of rice seedlings and feed on new transplants. They gobble up month-old seedlings and are hard to kill despite repeated attempts by the local farmers. According to the village committee, the disaster can be traced back to 2004, when some snails escaped from a pool at a fish farm. They spawned and invaded in great numbers in the following six years, and their destructive force has expanded to four villages. The battle against snails continues. [Photo/CFP]
