Ferrari and rivals such as Toyota, who also use Bridgestone tyres, have struggled to get heat into their tyres.

The Italian team, who have promised big improvements for the next race at their home Imola circuit, are also lacking the basic speed of champions Renault and Honda.

"It was a weekend to forget," said team boss Jean Todt. "Going home without points is a very bitter feeling, given that we have all we need to succeed.

"Now we want to show with results that we have what it takes to get back on top, starting when we race at home at Imola."

The San Marino Grand Prix opens the European leg of the calendar on April 23.
