Rossi wins Italian GP, revives hopes to retain world title

The 1-2 finish by Italian riders sparked a wild celebration by 90,000 home fans. Thousands flocked onto the track to cheer Rossi and Capirossi at the awards ceremony.

In the 250-cc race, Spain's Jorge Lorenzo edged Aprilia teammate Alex De Angelis by 0.11 seconds.

Andrea Dovizioso, riding a Honda, placed third to improve his overall lead to 108 points. Lorenzo moved to second with 88.

In the 125-cc race, Mattia Pasini of Italy was the victor, one thousandth of a second ahead of Spain's Alvaro Baustita for another 1-2 finish by Aprilia.

Bautista stays first overall with 119 points.

Defending world champion Thomas Luthi of Switzerland, competing with a fractured collarbone, placed ninth, 13 seconds behind Pasini.

The next championship round is at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain, next Sunday.
