Malaysian Fairuz Fauzy has joined the Spyker Formula One team as a test and reserve driver.

Ferrari-powered Spyker said in a statement that Fauzy, Dutchman Giedo van der Garde, Spaniard Adrian Valles and Germany's Markus Winkelhock would be part of their test programme for the season starting on March 18.

The team, renamed after the Dutch luxury sportscar manufacturer bought Midland last September, have Dutchman Christijan Albers and German rookie Adrian Sutil as their race drivers.

Fauzy, who competed in the GP2 feeder series as well as A1 Grand Prix last year, hopes to follow in the footsteps of Malaysia's first Formula One driver Alex Yoong and will attend race weekends.

Fauzy and 22-year-old van der Garde, who had previously been announced as a Super Aguri reserve driver, will take part in Friday test sessions at race weekends.

Valles and Winkelhock will carry out testing elsewhere during the season.

Midland failed to score a point last season.
