NHRA driver Eric Medlen was critically injured Monday in an accident at Gainesville Raceway, his team said.

Medlen, who drives for John Force Racing, was injured when his Funny Car crashed into the right guard rail during a test session. The 33-year-old was transported by helicopter to the University of Florida medical center, where he was being treated in the intensive care unit, the team said on its web site.

His injuries were not disclosed.

"Eric's extended family would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers," said Kelly Antonelli, spokesperson for JFR. "At the same time, we would ask that you respect the family's privacy at this time and allow the medical staff to do its work."

Medlen, a six-time NHRA winner, participated in the Gatornationals on Sunday.

A former crewman on Force's championship-winning Funny Cars, Medlen began his own driving career in 2004. He has six career victories.
