Malaysia is not concerned about Singapore's efforts to secure a Formula One grand prix, a Malaysian government official said on Wednesday.
Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Liow Tiong Lai told The Star Web site that their main concern was ensuring a successful Malaysian Grand Prix from April 6-8 at the Sepang circuit.
Liow was reacting to media reports in neighbouring Singapore that sports minister Azalina Othman was alarmed at the possible impact an F1 race in the city state would have on Malaysia.
Singapore is in talks with Formula One over the hosting of a street circuit grand prix, which may be held at night under floodlights -- a first for the sport.
Liow said that the important thing for Malaysia was that they hosted the race well.
"We don't have to be rivals as we can complement each other," he was quoted as saying on Wednesday.
"The minister [Azalina] has held talks with Bernie Ecclestone but nothing has been finalised yet," Liow added.
"I don't know the details but I heard there is some sort of understanding. The ultimate decision is up to F1."
Malaysia first hosted a Formula One grand prix in 1999 and Sepang extended its contract for another five years in 2006.
