The world number one goes for his eighth consecutive national title in Johor Baru this week and Malaysia's singles head coach Rashid Sidek wants to see some fighting spirit from other men's players.

"They have to put in their best efforts from the group stages right until the end even though realistically their chances of winning the title are slim," he told the Star newspaper.

"I don't want to see players showing no fighting spirit at all."

"The players must remember that performing up to expectations will be important here in determining selection to play in future Opens. There are also places at stake in the squad for the Thomas Cup Finals," he added.

Malaysia hosts the finals of the Thomas and Uber Cups, the top men's and women's international team tournaments, in Kuala Lumpur in May.
