Zambian boxer lifts WIBA weltherweight title

LUSAKA - Zambian female boxing star Esther Phiri defeated Duda Yankovich of Brazil in the Zambian capital on Saturday night, becoming the new Women's International Boxing Association (WIBA) weltherweight champion.

The 24-year-old Zambian fighter showed great aggression from the second round and won the 10 round bout, when the three judges marked the scores as 100-91, 100-95 and 100-91.

The new WIBA welterweight champion expressed her gratitude towards her supporters and said she was proud to be a Zambian.

The Brazilian pugilist, who is 10 years older than her Zambian opponent, wished Esther a bright future after the defeat.

The WIBA welterweight title was vacant before the fight.
