KIRKUK, Iraq - A car bomb explosion Friday badly wounded the police chief of Iraq's northern oil-rich city of Kirkuk, local police source said.

Taeb was badly injured in the explosion and was taken to a hospital for treatment. One of his sons who was a lieutenant in the police forces was killed, and three of Taeb's bodyguards were also wounded, the source added.
A number of civilian cars and buildings nearby were damaged. The security forces closed the area of the blast and prevented full movement there in fear of further attacks, the source said.
Recent spate of bombings and waves of violence are still ravaging the Iraqi cities, including the capital, more than four months after the country held its landmark parliamentary elections on March 7, raising fears of a return to violence.
