TRIPOLI - Libya's National Forces Alliance, led by former interim prime minister Mahmoud Jibril, won 39 seats of the total 80 party list seats of the national congress election, the electoral commission announced on Tuesday night.

Vote-counting showed that the NFA has obtained 39 of the total 80 party list seats, followed by Justice and Construction Party with 17 seats, according to the High National Electoral Commission's website.

The election, hailed as a milestone on the path toward democracy after the toppling of Libyan former leader Muammar Gaddafi in a months-long civil war, kicked off on July 7.

Among the National Congress' 200 seats, 80 seats are contended by party list candidates, while the remaining 120 seats are reserved for independents, according to the final draft of the electoral law published early February this year.
