China tops IPC Athletics World Champs

The 68-member Chinese delegation returned home on Wednesday with 22 gold medals and 6 new world records at the 2006 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championships held in Assen, Netherlands on September 2 to 12.

China led the championship with 22 gold medals, 12 silver, 21 bronze, followed by the United States with 16, 12, 4 and Australia with 16, 6 and 10.

Athens Paralympic triple gold medalist Guo Wei set the world record with 14.68m, 49.39m and 46.26m respectively in F35 class shot put, discus and F35/36/38 class javelin. The country's relay team composed of young athletics Li Jun, Zhang Lixin, Li Huzhao and Xiao Jialin laurelled 4x100m running champion in 52.27 seconds and 4x400m running champion with a time of 3 minutes 47.42 seconds in T53-54 class.

The event was the once-four-year cumulative championship held by the International Paralympic Committee and brought together over 1200 athletes from 78 countries and regions.

China earned three gold medals as it made its debut in the Championship in 1984. At Athens Paralympic Games in 2004, the nation brought home with 25 gold, 20 silver, 13 bronze medals and 15 new world records.
