Athletics-Spearmon sprints to world record over 300 metres(Reuters)Updated: 2006-09-20 12:37 HOUSTON, Feb 10- Wallace Spearmon set a new world record for the rarely-run 300 metres at an invitational indoor meeting in Fayetteville, Arkansas on Friday, the American picking up the biggest prize on a night when sprinters excelled. The world championship 200 metres silver medallist banked $25,000 for clocking 31.88 seconds as his compatriot Bershawn Jackson ran the quickest 400 metres of the year and Jamaica's Veronica Campbell equalled the fastest 60 metres for 2006. Spearmon led a trio of Americans under the previous mark of 32.19 seconds set by Brazilian Robson da Silva in 1989, with world indoor 400 metres record holder Kerron Clement edging LaShawn Merritt to claim second in 31.932 seconds. Jackson, the world 400 metres hurdles champion, clocked a season-leading 46.00 seconds flat to shade Bahamian Chris Brown by three-hundredths of a second. Campbell, the Olympic 200 metres gold medallist, registered a second consecutive indoor victory over U.S. 100 metres champion Lisa Barber. She finished in 7.04 seconds with Barber second in 7.10 and U.S. world 100 metres gold medallist Lauryn Williams third in 7.16. Twice Olympic 110 metres hurdles silver medallist Terrence Trammell narrowly missed the year's fastest men's 60 metres time after he edged out fellow American Tyson Gay to win in 6.555 seconds. |
