New head of Wukan village elected

WUKAN - Head of a new village committee of Wukan, a village in southern China's Guangdong Province, was elected Saturday night, several months after its villagers staging massive protests over illegal land sales and other issues.
Lin Zulian was elected as the chief of the committee with 6,205 votes, and Yang Semao, winning 3,609 votes, was elected as the deputy chief of the committee.
Lin said he would perform his duty in accordance with villagers' willings and law, and protect villagers' lawful rights and interests.
