BEIJING - China solved about 83,000 telecom fraud cases in 2016, according to the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) on Friday.
The number is a 49.6-percent increase from 2015, while total losses of 2.5 billion yuan (36 million U.S. dollars) were retrieved, said the MPS statement.
The MPS has called for another nationwide campaign against new crimes from May 1, including telecom and Internet fraud.
The campaign will target a higher number of resolved cases, as well as a lower number of registered cases and reduced losses in telecom and Internet fraud cases, the MPS said.
Chinese police caught 19,345 telecom fraud suspects in 2016, according to the Supreme People's Procuratorate in March.
