The celebration was full of Scotland's ties to Europe and culture connections with the world as 2019 marks the year when Britain may close the Brexit deal in March.

"Then I remember that couscous on the Costa Del Sol and I am welcome again. I am European. I am Indian. I am British. And in Scotland, where for now I remain, I am English," wrote Chitra Ramaswamy, a freelance journalist based in Edinburgh.

Message from the Skies runs until January 25 and is developed in partnership with Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature and supported by Creative Scotland through the Scottish Government's Edinburgh Festivals EXPO fund.

The three-day Hogmanay opened on December 30, 2018, with the stunning traditional Torchlight Procession, which sees a river of light weave its way through the historic heart of the city, down the Royal Mile, around Holyrood Palace and the Scottish Parliament before culminating in a stunning visual moment in Holyrood Park.
