SANTIAGO - A 6.7-magnitude earthquake jolted the port city of Coquimbo in northern Chile late Saturday with no immediate casualties reported.

The quake struck at 10:32 pm local time (0132 GMT Sunday) with the epicenter some 13km east of the town of Tongoy in the northern region of Coquimbo and 428 km north of capital Santiago, said the National Seismological Center of the University of Chile.

No initial damage or injuries have been reported although the tremor reportedly shaked buildings in Santiago.

The quake didn't have the characteristics that would trigger a tsunami, the authorities said.
