BANGKOK - Thailand's Election Commission (EC) ruled on Wednesday that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha's candidacy to run for prime minister in the upcoming Sunday's election is constitutional and legal.

In a statement, the EC announced that it has reached the unanimous resolution to rule that the nomination of Prayut as a candidate for the post-election prime minister by Palang Pracharath (power of people's state) Party is in accordance with the 2017 constitution and its organic law on the election of MPs.

The EC decision was made in response to a petition earlier lodged by a lawyer who had questioned Prayut's electoral candidacy.
