Chinese drone manufacturer DJI is looking to expand its presence in the camera market with its new sports camera aimed at millennials, said a company spokesman.

As the world's largest commercial drone manufacturer, DJI in 2012 began camera research and development, which has provided solid support for its leading position in the drone sector, said Xie Tiandi, DJI spokesman and director of communications.

"Ever since the establishment of the camera division, we have been thinking of creating a Chinese camera brand for the new generation. In 2018 we thought the timing was ripe," said Xie.

According to Xie, the company's first camera product, Osmo Pocket, launched last November, received a better response from customers than expected.

That encouraged the Shenzhen-based company to last week release a sports camera, the Osmo Action.

"As a Chinese company, DJI looks to expand its development in China, especially considering the Chinese economy's huge potential for growth," said Xie.

DJI will this summer launch a new flagship store in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, and the company will open 70-80 authorized stores across the nation in 2019.

Nearly 80 percent of DJI's sales come from overseas, but China is its fastest growing market.
