One dead, 11 injured in Peru quake

LIMA - At least one person was killed and 11 others injured after a 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck northern Peru on Sunday morning, said the head of the National Emergency Operations Center (COEN) Ricardo Seijas.

Dario Munoz, 48, a resident of San Ignacio, in northern Cajamarca department, died at his home when a rock fell on top of his house.

The focus of the quake, which occurred at 2:41 am local time (0741 GMT), was located at a depth of 141 km in the province of Alto Amazonas in the northern department of Loreto, according to the Geophysics Institute of Peru (IGP).

Seijas said the quake damaged about 130 homes, three schools and six clinics or hospitals.

The strong earthquake was also felt in Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil and Bolivia.
