Local resident Ibrahim Rasheed has a big family of nine members and they used to rent a 600-square-feet (55-square-meter) flat in Male. After the inauguration of the Sinamale Bridge, they moved to Hulhumale and lived in a 1,100-square-feet (102-square-meter) flat with three bedrooms.

Although the monthly rent payment increased from 22,000 Maldivian rufiyaa ($1,420) to 25,000 rufiyaa ($1,614), Rasheed said it was a reasonable deal as their new home was almost twice the size of that in Male.

"In fact, the rent per square feet dropped from 36.7 rufiyaa to 22.7 rufiyaa," he said.
