A grandfather surnamed Liu, who is suspected of burying a baby boy alive, has been placed under criminal detention according to a notice released on the official WeChat account of the public security bureau of Xintai on Friday.

The bureau has been investigating the case since it was informed on Aug 21 a live baby was found buried underground at a mountain near Shangliuhang village in Yangliu town of Xintai, a county-level city of Tai'an in Shandong province. The boy was born on Aug 13, according to the notice.

Two months after the baby was found and saved, Liu turned himself in at the Yangliu police station of Xintai, claiming the baby's grandmother buried him after it seemed he had died two days after being brought home.

Liu said the baby suffered from serious inflammation in his lungs and several other diseases after he was born. The family gave up medical treatment and brought him home.

The baby was discharged on Thursday from the second children and women's healthcare center of Jinan city after being treated for two months since his rescue, according to the Beijing News.

He is now being taken care by Zhou Shanghong, a rural doctor who saved him. Zhou has been taking care of the baby over the past two months and has paid 50,000 yuan for the baby's medical treatment.

The baby's family members never came to the hospital to see the baby, according to the hospital.
