"We condemn Jiang's remarks, which are unacceptable for the Tianjin Juilliard School or any social community ... We look forward to training artists in China with mutual respect and the power of art as the core values," says the statement by the Tianjin Juilliard School.

Additionally, Chinese-American violist, Yunjie Liu of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, posted on social media about the "virus made in China" on March 16.

His remarks have stirred anger among Chinese musicians. The League of China Orchestra condemned his remarks and issued an announcement on Tuesday, saying that "Liu's comments are an intolerable insult to the Chinese people". Chinese symphony orchestras, such as the Xi'an Symphony Orchestra, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and the China Philharmonic Orchestra, have also released announcements criticizing Liu's remarks.

Born in Shanghai, Liu graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory in 1985. He joined the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in 1993 as associate principal viola.

On Wednesday, NYO-China, the National Youth Orchestra of China, announced the resignation of Liu as its viola teacher and new candidates for the position will be announced soon.

NYO-China, which was launched in 2017, and gathered over 100 musicians from ages 16 to 19, was inspired by the National Youth Orchestra of the United States, a free program which was started in 2013 by Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute.
