The 2020 Cultures of China-Water Cube Cup, the Chinese song contest for overseas Chinese and youth of Hong Kong and Macao, kicked off in Beijing on July 22.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the annual event will be held online, and will see contestants from over 30 countries across the world.

According to the event organizer, the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, contestants could apply through the online streaming app Kuaishou. The final round of the contest will be held from Sept 16 to 20.

First launched in 2011, the contest aims at offering a platform for overseas Chinese, especially the younger generations, to communicate and better understand Chinese culture.

Last year, it attracted over 30,000 contestants from 31 countries, with the finals drawing over 600 contestants to Beijing to perform at the Water Cube, the main venue for water sports during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
