Beijing has authorized 87 self-driving cars from 14 companies to test on roads in designated areas, and the cumulative mileage of autonomous vehicle road tests hit 2.21 million kilometers, according to a report released on Feb 5.

Currently, Beijing has 200 open testing roads for self-driving cars, totaling 699.58 kilometers in the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Zone and districts of Haidian, Shunyi and Fangshan.

Last year, 73 self-driving cars took part in tests, and road test mileage with people present reached 1,021,568 kilometers.

By the end of 2020, a total of 15,006 people called Baidu's self-driving cars through their mobile phones, with over 90 percent of users saying they were still willing to use the service.

New energy cars accounted for 80 percent of the total tested cars in the closed test sites in 2020, and the number of new energy cars used in self-driving tests is increasing year by year, the report said.

Among the total tested cars, domestically produced vehicles accounted for 50 percent, and 80 percent of new energy testing cars were domestically made in last year's tests.

By the end of 2020, the accumulative test mileage at closed test sites reached more than 200,000 kilometers, with 19 collisions and no tester injuries.
