In 2008, the airborne troops that came to the rescue after the Wenchuan earthquake left a deep impression on Cheng Qiang. When the airborne force finished the disaster relief mission and left the area, Cheng stood in the crowd holding a sign reading "I will become a paratrooper when I grow up", leading him to be known as "Earthquake Boy".

In 2013, Cheng signed up for military service in the airborne division.

On National Day 2019, Cheng marched in Tian'anmen Square as a member of the air force formation in the military parade celebrating the 70th anniversary of the PRC's founding.
