Ma Jiwu, a 99-year-old Nanjing Massacre survivor, died on Tuesday in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, reducing the number of officially registered survivors to 65, according to the Memorial Hall of the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders.

Ma testified when he was alive that he saw several Japanese soldiers force local residents to carry goods for them during their occupation of the city. A soldier cut the head of an old man, who was in his 70s or 80s with a knife after noticing that he was too weak to carry a table.

"I can't bear to see it anymore," he said during the testimony.

On Dec 13, 1937, the Nanjing Massacre began after Japanese troops had captured Nanjing. The invaders killed more than 300,000 Chinese civilians and unarmed soldiers in the following six weeks.
