Five deaths caused by road collapse in Haidian, Beijing

A road collapse in Beijing's Haidian district near the Fragrant Hills area resulted in five deaths, said the district government on Wednesday.

According to the announcement on the district's official WeChat account, the accident happened at around 6:30 pm Tuesday.

The slope protection of a road where an apartment building for the elderly is located had collapsed, trapping 12 people in the building's apartments.

Five people were found dead and the other seven sent to the hospital.

According to the notice released by the district in the afternoon, six of the people sent to the hospital have been discharged after medical examination and one has received surgery to repair a leg fracture.

The reason for the collapse is still under investigation.
